Over the past few years, the rise of same-day delivery services in India has been accompanied by significant advancements in delivery efficiency. Ever since the pandemic, there has been ample experimentation with drones and other autonomous delivery systems in intra-city quick commerce. Aerial logistics companies in India are increasingly leveraging drone technology to provide faster and more efficient last-mile delivery, including same day delivery. This is particularly useful in urban areas where traffic congestion, poor roads and distance can prove to be a roadblock to traditional delivery methods.

Autonomous drones equipped with advanced navigational systems can navigate complex delivery routes and optimize delivery times, leading to increased customer satisfaction and reduced delivery costs. As the use of drone technology in same day delivery continues to grow, industry experts predict that it will play an increasingly important role in the future of logistics and supply chain management in India. Gartner predicts that by 2026, more than one million drones will be carrying out retail deliveries, up from 20,000 today.

However, given the strict regulations and restrictions in place for drone deliveries, one might ask if the idea is actually viable or just another passing fad. So we did a deep dive into the potential of drones as a means of same day delivery in India, weighing the technological, logistical, and regulatory challenges involved.

Benefits of drones in same-day delivery

Reduced traffic congestion and environmental impact

Urban areas are getting densely populated, with high-rises dominating the city skylines. The growing influx of population is also leading to traffic congestion in two-dimensional roads. With more time and resources wasted in transit, last mile delivery by two or four-wheeled vehicles in jam-packed cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai definitely becomes expensive. At the same time, it leaves a trail of harmful emissions. Drones can be the perfect solution as it can not only avert traffic but also reduce the carbon footprint in same day delivery by loads.

Increased speed and efficiency

Drones can significantly improve the speed and efficiency of same day delivery by overcoming traffic and infrastructure constraints. With their ability to fly directly to a location, drones can deliver packages far more quickly and with greater precision.

Ability to access remote or difficult-to-reach areas

Drones can come in handy to deliver small volumetric weight but super critical essentials to rural interiors. The idea is to use drones for same day delivery of critical goods, medicines or medical equipment to first responders and emergency services.

Lower costs than traditional delivery methods

If drones become mainstream in the future, the cost of using it for same day delivery might typically be lower than traditional delivery methods, due to reduced labor and infrastructure requirements. However, initial investment costs for drone technology and related infrastructure may involve some cash burn for logistics companies.

Challenges and limitations of using drones for same day delivery in India

In 2021, the Indian government released the draft of The Drone Rules, with an aim to strike a balance between safety and operability of drones in regular deliveries. Ultimately, the aim is to maintain regulations that are supportive of drone operators while also meeting the government's safety and security requirements. The engagement between drone operators and regulators has been positive so far, but it is important to remain cautious of any regulations that may be introduced in response to negative incidents.

Technical challenges and lack of skilled operators

Using drones for same day delivery in India faces several technical challenges, including fluctuating weather conditions, limited battery life, and the need for reliable navigation in crowded urban environments. Additionally, the absence of skilled operators poses significant obstacles to the widespread adoption of this technology. Not only are good quality drones expensive, they also need to be handled with expertise only by trained personnel — which can be another costly investment.

Safety concerns, including collisions with high-rises

Drone delivery raises several safety concerns, such as the risk of collisions with buildings or people. To mitigate these risks, effective sense-and-avoid technology, robust communication systems, and trained operators are essential. Additionally, compliance with regulatory requirements and public education on safe drone operation are critical for the safe and responsible use of drones in same day delivery.

Where does Blowhorn stand on the use of drones for same day delivery?

Our CEO Mithun Srivatsa strongly believes in the potential of drones in same day delivery. In fact, Blowhorn has run some successful experiments with drone delivery of packages.

According to our CEO, it is clear that drone delivery could be the next disruptive force in the industry. Although there are obstacles to overcome, the logistics sector involving drones is expected to experience quick expansion in the coming years as more businesses recognize its benefits. Even though major e-commerce companies are only starting to experiment with pilot testing in major cities, it won't be long before we witness our packages being flown to our homes in a matter of minutes.

Will drone delivery take off?

Using drones for same day delivery in India has immense potential, but several challenges stand in the way. Efforts to overcome these challenges are already underway, including collaboration between drone operators and regulators, investments in infrastructure, and advances in drone technology.

As drone technology improves and regulatory frameworks become more supportive, the use of drones for delivery is likely to increase. However, it is important to ensure that safety, security, and privacy concerns are addressed while delivering on the potential benefits of this emerging technology. With collaboration and innovation, drone delivery has the potential to revolutionize the logistics industry and transform the way goods are delivered in India.
